The fabric-reinforced tape was invented during WW II to help American soldiers fix everything from combat boots to fighter plane propellers. Since it was waterproof it was called duck tape. After the war, home builders found that it was perfect for joining air ducts. So they called it duct tape. I would have preferred the peace-time name. But somebody in yahoo land had beaten me to it. It's my favorite product ever. There is just nothing it can't fix. Next time you get a nasty blister on a long hike, slap on a couple layers of the magic 1 7/8" tape right where it hurts. The slippery tape will slide against your sock, and thereby preventing further chaffing. Put your boots back on, and you'll be good till you get to camp.
